Balayage vs highlights: which is right for you?

Balayage and highlights both lighten your hair, but they get there in very different ways. Highlights are applied in foils from root to tip for a uniform, all-over result. Balayage is hand painted onto the surface of the hair for a softer, sun-kissed finish. Which one is right for you comes down to the look you want and how often you are happy to visit the salon.

Stylist tip: if you point at a photo of "lived-in" colour with darker roots melting into lighter ends, you are asking for balayage. If you point at all-over bright blonde, you are asking for highlights.
How they grow out
This is the question that decides it for many people. Foiled highlights start at the root, so when your hair grows you see a clear band of natural colour. That is fine if you enjoy a regular salon visit, but it does commit you to one.
Balayage is painted away from the root, so the regrowth is already built into the look. It softens as it grows rather than forming a line, which is why it is the favourite for anyone who wants three months or more between appointments.
Which should you choose?
Choose highlights if you want noticeable, even brightness, you like a polished finish, and a six to eight week appointment rhythm suits you.
Choose balayage if you want dimension rather than all-over lightness, you prefer a natural grown-out look, and you want fewer salon visits.

Is balayage more expensive than highlights?
A single balayage appointment often costs more than a basic foil appointment because it takes longer and is fully bespoke. Over a year, though, balayage usually works out cheaper because you need fewer visits to keep it looking good.
Does balayage damage hair less than highlights?
Both use lightener, so neither is damage free. Balayage tends to be gentler overall because it covers less of the hair and is refreshed less often. A bond-building treatment alongside either service helps keep hair strong.
Can you combine balayage and highlights?
Yes, and it is one of the looks we are asked for time and again. Face-framing foils add brightness where it flatters you most, while balayage keeps the rest soft and natural.
How long does balayage last?
Because there is no harsh regrowth line, balayage comfortably lasts three to four months before it needs refreshing. A toner or gloss in between keeps the colour fresh.
